VipRiser – the first beta

Today I’ve released the very first beta version of the VipRiser. Yes, I know, it is strange name. Naming applications is definitely not my strength.

Anyways, the VipRiser means VIrtual PRinter SERvice and does exactly what its name implies. It is virtual print driver intended to act as a conduit or a bridge between a document on a desktop and an iPad (or some other device/service).

The original idea came from my quest to replace stacks of paper I used to print on, with something digital, so that any notes I would take could be synced back to my desktop. Kind of like having a ‘digital paper’. When I got my iPad, I have though immediately to myself: this is the device which will make it possible. The VipRiser replaces my printer on the desktop and I use iAnnotate on the iPad although any PDF reader will do.

The functionality is rather basic at the moment. You can print stuff out, but annotations will not be synced back in anyway. My intention is to link the original with annotated copy using TagoMan’s tagging facilities. Since I had to enhance the TagoMan to support ‘one to one’ tags, the next version of VipRiser will have to wait for TagoMan to be released first (should happen within a month).

The VipRiser also supports ‘printing’ to CrocoDoc. Although this functionality wasn’t part of my original vision, I did find myself using it all the time now. It makes it really easy to collaborate on a document online. I don’t have to send emails with the original document back and forth anymore and keeping track of versions and comments. With VipRiser you can just ‘print’ a document to the CrocoDoc server and what you get back is unique URL you can use to view and annotate the document online. There are many other ways how one can collaborate with others online (VNC, shared folders, wikis, etc.) but I guess the main reason why I like and use this method better then others (beside being the ‘inventor’) is that it is so instantaneous. Just print what you need out, no need to open ports on your firewall or install additional software. …and it works with any application which supports printing.

In any case, I hope others find the VipRiser as useful piece of software as I do.

TagoMan – maintenance release

This version is a maintenance version, no new features but most of problems reported by users should be fixed now. Namely:

disable context menu plugin (repalaced by services in 10.6)
show Dock Icon by default
resolve crash when a file is dragged out of a file group
resolve crash when a tag is dragged off to create a taglink
some cosmetical changes

TagoMan is free app. I hope you’ll find it as useful as I do…
